Seeking Board Members w/ Background in Intoxicated Driving Prevention/Awareness
Posted: 12:00 AM, Wed, Nov 04 2009
Bus to Show, LLC is a non-profit organization that is currently seeking an unpaid board member to serve at quarterly meetings to ensure that the company is functioning as effectively as possible in its efforts to minimize intoxicated driving.
Bus to Show's mission is to minimize intoxicated driving by offering and providing sober transportation in the form of buses to and from concerts and other events that traditionally have a high level of intoxicated participants. Bus to Show's vision is to maximize ridership by making its buses appealing to the communities it serves by: providing effective transportation, minimizing cost to riders, offering top-level on-board and bus stop entertainment, minimizing negative environmental impact and teaming up with other non-profits to allow riders to maximize their sense of philanthropic contribution.
As a historical note, Bus to Show came about, and is currently functioning as, a fund raising campaign for The Basics Fund, Inc., a non-profit that raises funds to pay for artists' health insurance. Due to the success it has seen in Boulder in reducing intoxicated driving (DUIs in Boulder down approximately 26.66% or 299/year, since it started in 2007 - ), coupled with the hugely disproportionate cost to proceeds ratio of this project, it has become necessary for Bus to Show to operate as its own, separate non-profit. With grant-based contributions covering the operating costs of Bus to Show, it will be able to continue its relationship with The Basics Fund and also open itself up to benefit other non-profits, by allowing these organizations to assemble groups of riders who donate toward the sponsoring cause, instead of having rider money go toward the cost of insuring, operating and maintaining a bus company.
The board member's duties would be to review rider feedback and internal statistics regarding ridership and compare this information with external numbers kept by law enforcement and other agencies, which independently track instances of intoxicated driving in the cities that the organization serves. This data would ultimately be used to ensure that proper consideration is given to maintaining or improving the effectiveness of the organization's approach to its mission by proposing new directorial measures as well as voting on newly proposed directorial measures at each board meeting. This board member would also be responsible for verifying that the funds raised and granted are being allocated in accordance with the ratios set forth in the organization's approved budget so that it may obtain and retain 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The approximate time commitment of this board member will be 16 hours per quarter.
Quarterly meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month in which the Quarter ends (i.e. March, June, September, and December). Teleconference, video conference, and online chat are acceptable ways of attending if a member is not able to be physically present at a quarterly meeting. Unless otherwise approved and scheduled, quarterly meetings will be held at
Once selected, board members must serve for at least one quarterly meeting. A board member may resign at any time, but should give as much notice as possible so that their position may be filled before the next quarterly meeting. Ideally at least one full quarter of notice would be given before a board-member resigns. A board member can also be removed at any quarterly meeting if a measure is introduced and then passed by a 2/3 majority vote.
The board-member will be selected based on qualification. Bus to Show would like to see this position filled by someone who is credentialed in some form of intoxicated driving awareness and/or prevention. However, alternative qualifications will be considered if the candidate's currently or formerly held positions and achievements demonstrate that the candidate is sufficiently knowledgeable and passionate about intoxicated driving awareness and/or prevention.
To apply, please compose a letter outlining your credentials and explaining why you are interested in serving on The Bus to Show Board of Directors, and send to dustin@thebasicsfund.org, with BTS Board of Directors in the Subject Line.
Thank you,
Dustin Huth
