Letters from the Ghost Chief: Vol. 1 Issue: Membership = All you can ride Busffet

Posted: 12:00 AM, Tue, Dec 08 2009

Dear loved ones,

Today is the time of year in which it is time to give. What more can you want from yourself than to purchase a gift that is both good and true? Or, for your friend or child, or neighbor? Yes, now and for a limited time only...possibly forever...you may do so with none other than THE BASICS FUND!!!!!!!!! That's right, crazy Dustin is slashing prices! See below on ways in which you too, can enjoin The Basics Fund Monthly Membership, All you can Ride Bussfet.

In case you are wondering, The Basics Fund is the best!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. Enough silliness of tongue. Here is our gift to you. As promised in the previously written edition of this prestigious newsletter, a plan for the future is to be unveiled during the course of these typings.

The issue that we were trying to solve is how to simultaneously do both The artists' health insurance thing and the sober transportation party bus thing, when both have been costing us money, and despite its astoundingly positive effect on intoxicated driving related incidents in Boulder (which is to say, negative effect, in that there have been a lot less of them), Bus to Show has proven to be more of a fund lowerer than a fund raiser. The solution is this: 2 non-profits. Ok. We're splitting the thing in 2. Don't worry, though, this only means that everything gets better for everyone. Otherwise we wouldn't do it. Details are as follows:

1) If you're here for the buses, tell ya moms and ya pops that you want a couple of months' membership for your holiday presents, cuz now hrough December, 45 bones/head/month gets you an all you can ride busffet for any month in 2010. We'll be offering trips a minimum of 3 nights a week (usually Thursday-Saturday, but based on interest)...we'll go more if we can/feel like it. Buses will go to any show that has at least 20 riders reserved at least 24 hours in advance on any of those nights.

We will still be offering trial memberships for anyone who doesn't want to commit to a full month.  These run between 20 and 30 bones/head/trip. Membership also includes discounted tickets to any Basics Fund sponsored event, and a copy of one of our artists' work.

Keep in mind, you don't have to be a rider to buy a membership for someone. I am writing this at this very moment, in part because I am a shrewd little Ghost Chief, who knows that many parents want their kids to stay safe and have sober transportation as often as possible. It is my hope that these parents will find out about this opportunity to give an amazing gift that will keep their kids safe, support a good cause (proceeds are still going to artists' health insurance), reduce carbon emissions through buspooling, promote local art and music, and be a really, really lot of fun for the person riding.

For anyone who just wants to reduce intoxicated driving overall, be a secret santa, and buy one for one of our regular riders. We'll make sure it gets assigned to someone who will get the most out of it.

If you are interested, please call 720.204.0408 to get all the details and to enroll. You can also email membership@thebasicsfund.org with questions.

2) if you're in it for the Art, don't worry. The proceeds will still be put toward The Basics Fund. And, there will actually be a lot more proceeds to contribute. Here's why: With this split in companies, Bus to Show will be able to raise funds through grants to supplement the cost of operations. Of course, in order to do this, we will need to get tax exempt status. And, in order to do that, we will need 1 more board member to serve on a volunteer basis. The board member must be decently credentialed in intoxicated driving awareness/prevention...aka formerly served with MADD or something. They must be willing to put in approximately 16 hours of work per quarter devoted to ensuring that we are operating as effectively as possible toward our goal of reducing intoxicated driving to and from concerts. If you know someone who qualifies, please tell them about us, an have them contact me directly at dustin@thebasicsfund.org. For some reason, finding a person who meets this description has proven ridiculously challenging thus far. Any help we can receive toward this would make worlds of difference.

Alright, kiddies. I know that was a lot of changes in a relatively small number of paragraphs, but please feel free to hit me with questions.

One more thing...we're supposed to have a really thorough and flattering (hopefully) newspaper article come out on us in The Daily Camera on December, 20. So, keep an eye out, please. This will be our first time being written about in a paper that people actually have to pay for. A very momentous milestone, indeed!

Okay. Enough. Love with every chamber,
