Letters from the Reservation: The Magic of Magic Wands

Posted: 12:00 AM, Sun, Dec 28 2008

What's up, everybody. This one's going to be short and sweet, because it's 2 AM, I'm a little buzzed, I'm going to be driving autistic kids on a field trip tomorrow afternoon, and, let's face it, it's pretty late in the game and we all just want to know what's up with buses. Fine.
....But first, happy holidays. The highlight of my Christmas was building a magic wand for my Nephew. He's 6. The wand is made of a magic plant that grows in enchanted lakes and has roots that are made of electric eels. It has phoenix feathers on it, and a baby dragon's skull. It looks so badass. I kind of think that maybe it might actually be able to do actual magic. I told my neph that the best wizards use their powers to cast helpful spells far more often than they do to cast harmful ones. He digested this for a few minutes, and then came back to me and asked, "Captain Uncle Dustin...." (I've insisted that he put the Captain in front ever since Pirates of the Caribbean) "Captain Uncle Dustin," he said, "....how do I cast a spell to help someone forgive someone?" Wow. I didn't know what to say. Kids, you know? They just see it all so simply. In the end, I told him that forgiveness is an extremely complicated spell, and that the spell sounds almost like an apology, but with a wand in your hand.
