Letters from the Reservation 9/24/09: DUIs down 26.66% in Boulder thanks to YOU!

What's up, y'all???? Everyone looks great! Of course. As always. I guess I should start by saying, sorry for leaving you all alone for so long. It was a weird summer for me...and for all of us, I think. We got bombarded by huge show after huge show and it was all we could do to keep up from one to the next. We became a huge operation this summer, running a record of 18 buses in a single night during Phish, between BTS Bus Parties to Red Rocks, Phamily Reunion Shuttles, and Mishawaka Shuttles. And that was just 1 night out of the 4 night run. And the week before that, it was STS9. It was a massacre of a summer. We transported thousands and thousands of people. It was exhausting, but we survived it. And now,it's starting to slow down a bit, and we finally have time to reflect.

I think the most important thing that can be gained from this summer is the peace of mind that comes from a statistic on the boulder police website, which shows that in the last 2 years since we've been doing this, DUIs in Boulder have dropped 26.66%, and in the year before we started, there were 3 deaths as a result of Drunk Driving, whereas in the 2 years we've been carting everyone around, there has been a total of only 1 death. The number of Police on staff is the same. The amount of funding the Police Department receives is the same. And the Population of Boulder has actually increased. I would like to thank everyone who has ridden our buses, or encouraged others to ride, because in the end we can offer buses all day, but if you guys don't ride, no lives would be saved. Also, this data is through 2008. Since we carried at least 25% more people this summer than we did last summer, we should see another significant decrease in drunk driving related crime when the 2009 numbers come out. Now that fall and winter are coming around, I am looking forward to rebuilding this crazy ass thing. I wanna get the fam back together. I want every bus party to make us all feel like we're an essential part of something bigger than ourselves again. I want to win the bluegrass kids back. I want to bring Fort Collins in on this, and have a bus dedicated up there full time. I want Jeff Blake to start a music blog on the facebook group as well as on the website entitled, "A Particularly Legit Ensemble," the purpose of which will be to focus on the music, as well as the ensembles of those in attendance, because as we all know, Jeff keeps his ensemble Legit. I want to broaden our artistic minds, and explore new mediums, artists, and venues. Create a platform for our sponsored artists where their association with our organization means more than health insurance and bus parties, it means being a part of a legacy of renowned artists, whose talents we take the time to recognize and then give them a hand up so that the rest of the world doesn't miss out.
